From The Bob Dylan Encyclopedia by Michael Gray:
"Down in the Groove [1988] Dylan’s 33rd album (if you count the compilations), and bearing,
like so many of the same era, a title determined to undercut any idea that inspired
work might lie within. After a silence of nearly two years, here was a further devaluing of the whole
notion of a new Bob Dylan album as something significant, and another refusal to offer new songs
of his own. If it had been better recorded and Dylan had brought some creative alertness to his
vocals, instead of rasping through on automatic, this could at least have been a Self Portrait II: there
are interesting song selections here; but Dylan treats them maladroitly, fails to commend them
as a purposive collection and throws in feeble makeweights: ‘Had a Dream About You Baby’, recycled
from the soundtrack of the quaintly atrocious Hearts of Fire film of 1987; the risibly turgid ‘Death
Is Not the End’, cut at the Infidels sessions and rightly rejected then; and two songs with lyrics by
ROBERT HUNTER rejected even by the GRATEFUL DEAD as under-par: the tetchy, braggartly ‘Silvio’
and the shrivellingly dull-minded ‘Ugliest Girl in the World’. This quality of work was so far below
that of Dylan’s albums of the 1960s that it just depressed the hell out of you. Continued silence
would have been more dignified than this."

Watch
doesn't sound anything like the crappy 3 albums before it. No classic but a tight enjoyable listen.
Silvio is still in the set list today. "Let the echo decide if i was right or wrong." |
