Peter's Faves

I became a Bob Dylan fan when... I realized he was as essentially American an artist as ever lived, a complex reflection of more of the nation and culture than a thousand commentators ever could express.

Plugged or unplugged?
His unplugging was a fine moment in up-yours rebel yellin'. The old fogies of folk like the constipated, insipid Pete Seeger were has-beens before they ever started, and clung to a ludicrous notion of cultural expression that was academic, reductive, condescending, and just plain boring. But Dylan was, then, phenomenal plugged or unplugged.

Favorite album of all time (if I had to choose one): The earliest have been the best - the second to fifth, more or less. There's great stuff all through his discography, of course.

Favorite song:
Hattie Carroll is one for the ages; there are many other early ballads and the like that are unsurpassed.

My earlyst memory of music was sitting around the piano at family gatherings, singing folk songs, "Irene Goodnidht," "This Land is Your Land ," along with many other loved favorites, even "Greensleves". A long line of folk music lead to Dylan ,then Dylan took the leed, and showed the way. Old Pete and his mates just couldnt cope with change, but were an important part of where Dylan went.

Peter my sweet,
"clung to a ludicrous notion of cultural expression" Maybe there was a bad connection and this was all you were able to hear? Mr. Dylan shares my soul plugged & unplugged. He is certainly one of the 12 apostles.

You make an excellent point on this Peter! He's right up there with Ralph Waldo Emmerson in my opinion. With his especial way of using words to create images, he has covered the entire spectrum of the American experience.

While I understand the ideas behind the folk and folk-rock debate, I'm one of those few that really like them BOTH. I love Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger and see them as partially responsible for creating what we now know as Bob Dylan.
