The 2000s

The Essential Bob Dylan
2000: The NE tour continues, and Dylan records a theme song for the movie Wonder Boys. Called “Things Have Changed,” it proves the high quality of Time Out of Mind was no fluke.

Love and Theft
2001: Dylan wins the Best Original Song Oscar for “Things Have Changed.” A new album, Love and Theft, is released on September 11, but despite its brilliance, it is overshadowed by world events. Dylan’s return to Madison Square Garden in post-WTC New York is captured on the emotional bootleg In the Garden.

Bob Dylan Live 1975
2002: A fall tour of the U.S. finds Dylan abandoning guitar for keyboards, and playing two to three nightly covers of songs by terminally ill singer-songwriter Warren Zevon. He also covers, for no apparent reason, the Rolling Stones’ “Brown Sugar.” When George Harrison dies, he adds in a touching version of “Something.” Live 1975, a document of the Rolling Thunder Revue, is released to great acclaim.

2003: A somber, seven-minute song, “Cross the Green Mountain,” is recorded for the Civil War film Gods and Generals. Dylan’s own movie, Masked & Anonymous, is widely panned. The soundtrack album, featuring covers of Dylan songs in a variety of languages, meets with a more generous response, and also includes a few live cuts performed by Dylan and his band.

2004: Another historical live album, Live 1964: Concert at Philharmonic Hall, is released. Dylan appears on the Warren Zevon tribute album, singing Zevon’s “Mutineer,” recorded on tour in 2002.

Bob Dylan Live 1964
2005: The widely praised, four-hour-long Martin Scorsese documentary No Direction Home is shown on TV and released on DVD, along with a two-CD set of outtakes from the early ‘60s. A new song, “Tell Ol’ Bill,” is recorded for the Charlize Theron movie North Country, proving once again that Dylan has lost none of his genius.

2006: In February, news leaks that Dylan has been rehearsing new material in a theatre in Poughkeepsie, New York. Recording sessions in New York City are rumored the following week. Internet message boards light up as fans await more of the Gospel According to Bob. In Spring, Bob tours in Europe and in the summer tours in US minor-league baseball stadiums. The latest Dylan studio album, Modern Times, is released in August.
