thin silver sound like razor wire caught by the moon among the shadows -
for me Planet Waves forms a trilogy with BOTT and Street Legal (much as i love Desire and The Rolling Thunder Tour - that whole things feels like a separate project) the warm - giving way to angular chills - the darkness of night - a mess of mixed up confusion and a new voice - all common elements to his main seventies output.
the sensitive playing of the band - even when they're playing dirty - is hardly commented on in reviews, probably because it all sounds so casual. but then so do the basement tapes.
the lyrics are fragments from a cagey autobiography of sorts and make this the nearest to Chronicles that Dylan has yet put down on vinyl.
Going Going Gone is a scarifying first look at the valley below and the liner notes and crude cover point the way for a new street suss Bob - while being nostalgic at the same time - the black and white reminds me of the famous Pocket editions of the Beat Poets especially Ginsberg.
And the songs! Forever Young is justly famous - as are Wedding Song and Dirge, twisted ballads with plenty of blood in their tracks.
But even the smaller pleasures - the humour of 'I swear you could make me sing' or the crack in his voice on Hazel 'dirty blonde hair - i wouldn't be ashamed to be seen with you, anywhere...'
Far more focused and alive than New Morning, this is great stuff and one of my most often listened to Bob albums.

Ther was a good site, with a lot of background info on the Bob Dylan songs (http://www.geocities.com/temptations_page/DylGuide.html#intro) Seems like this site hasn't been updated for some time :( I'm looking to start a simmilar site my self. Yep, yet another B D site. Altought there is a lot of interesting info on http://expectingrain.com/ ... what I will try to accomplish, is to build a simple straight-forward site, just with "Song titles" and info (names, backgrounds, places, annotations, ..) on this song. (kind like the http://www.geocities.com/temptations_page/DylGuide.html#intro site) I you have background info on a album, or a song, please share it with me.

I was just a few years behind the times when Dylan exploded on the folk scene. I'm so totally absorbed in all phases of his music now, but this album hits particularly hard in the gut. It is every bit as relevant today as 40+ years ago!! "Masters of War" and "With God on our Side" go to my very core as I think about our politics of the last decade. But then, most all of them have a critical message for today. Will we ever really change? We have our first chance for a real change and I hope we don't blow it! I'm almost afraid to wish folks a Happy New Year.

I agree that Obama has made a disturbing move to the center. Call me naive, but those AM briefings he gets from the CIA have got to be unsettling, since he gets detailed reports on Al Quaeda plots to destroy us. I like the fact that his budget is planning for a better educated America...poor and rich alike. And I also like the other goals: getting off oil, and retraining America for jobs that support the new energy infrastructure. I hope he's being truthful when he says he wants to use troops in Afghanistan to teach the Afghanis how to defend themselves. Someone is FINALLY realizing that we cannot afford to police the world (thank God). But Iraq...I agree that more troops is very bad. As for the 60's? I'm so glad you released the 1966 concert in England. Was it at the Royal Albert or in Manchester? I hear different reports. I'm collecting as much of the live material as I can get my hands on and it's all fabulous, but that concert's in a class by itself. My favorite song of all time? Chimes of Freedom Flashing.

I am not saying that Dylan is a learned philosopher understanding counter culture better than PhDs of universities with insights that shake the foundations of powers on a global scale. If he isn't, then he receives his lyrics from a necrotic daemon that is a learned philosopher understanding counter culture better than PhDs of universities with insights that shake the foundations of powers on a global scale. I have just begun looking for a copy of Dylan's 'Renaldo and Clara', without any success. I saw the original four hour film in an obscure cinema in London when I was fifteen years old, in 1976. I loved it, although doubtlessly missed a great deal that perhaps I would now appreciate more. Is anyone able to help me find a copy?

I have all of Dylan's music, and I have seen him in concert so many times I can't count them - including the MIDWEST - he likes the Lincoln Nebraska area, by the way. I passionately love all of his music (though I skipped the Born Again stuff0. To me, Street Legal is his best album - meaning it is the best from the best poet/musician in any era.

I was kind of upset with the 'all songs written by Bob Dylan' claim on this cd. Both Rollin' and Tumblin' and Someday Baby (aka Trouble No More) are usually credited to Muddy Waters. Sure Dylan changed the lyrics but the tunes and choruses are not his. I assume what he claims is technically 'legal' but I think he should give credit where credit is due.

a major work - choosing between this and timeout of mind is like picking Brining It All Back Home or Highway 61. Both are great.
Love and Theft has a looser less disciplined sound - a wider range and feel, less 'produced' than 'Time..' but also less moody and dark.
Most of the time.

since the restored version of the Peckinpah movie came out, the soundtrack is much closer to this album.
this is great little album of music if you are looking for something with the ranging emotional feel of Paris Texas and the country swoon of Ronnie Lane and Ron Wood's 70s soundtrack work.
good musicianship all round - Roger McGuin playing very understatedly nevertheless adds to a cantina of sound more fully exploded by The Rolling Thunder Revue. If you are looking for a hidden suite of Dylan songs - it aint this babe. If you like soundtrack music and an album of moods, this'll serve you just fine.
And it has the best version of Knocking on Heavens Door.
