I've never had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Dylan in concert. Does anyone know when he'll be in the midwest?

Bob Dylan is a natural mystic. I believe that much of what Bob writes comes from places inside of him he doesn't fully understand. He deals in prophecy and spiritual areas that make his music and words and the way he performs so compelling. He appeals to things common to all human beings. As his former producer Bob Johnson said: "God didn't just tap him on the shoulder--he kicked him in the ass!!" Bob Dylan was put here on this earth at this time to head people in the direction of truth. There are many great songs and great songwriters but not many are annointed like Bob Dylan is.

The two greats in my opinion. Dylan is the poetical genius lyric wise, Young the poetical genius spirit wise.

Not only is Blood on the Tracks the greatest set of songs Dylan ever wrote, but it is possibly the greatest set of songs anyone has written. From a Pop Music History perspective, it hits on what had previously made Dylan's career influential and great(folk-rock, country-rock, confessional lyrics, abstract lyrics, etc...). Additionally, it falls at the pivotal point in music history which separates the old from the new, as the Rock that Dylan and the Stones and the Beatles and everyone else had made was slowly overtaken by punk and other such genres. But, even without that historical context, it still stands as Bob Dylan's single greatest collection of songs. First off, the instrumentation on the record is amazing, as Dylan's vocals, guitar, and harmonica are in the greatest shape they had ever been. Additionally, the two groups that backed him up in these sessions are sympathetic to the songs, and they feel the groove of each track. This is evident from the ringing guitars of "Tangled Up in Blue" to the Kooper-esque organ on "Idiot Wind." The brilliant instrumentation keeps each song thematically and musically, while still keeping the album varied enough for the listener to have to do his own job of listening. After that, the words strike true. Whether or not this album is about Sara Lownds, Dylan allows every word to sound like it happened to him. However, every song, while feeling specific lyrically, is absolutely universal in the end. The man in "Tangled Up In Blue" is every man who went around the country with his girl and him chasing each other, no matter if he drove a car, or her ex got into dealing with slaves. The line between the personal and the surreal and the universal is blurred, and it doesn't matter anymore to Dylan. They're all the same in the end, and it Dylan finally, truly realizes it. Unlike Blonde on Blonde and Highway 61 Revisted, where the symbolism was druggy, here it is rustic, and thus takes on a quality of truth.

I wanted to reply to agree with the famous Anonymous that Blood on the Tracks is the greatest album title, but I just realised I wrote that myself months ago! So I'll just say I think rustic is the perfect word to describe this album.

My earlyst memory of music was sitting around the piano at family gatherings, singing folk songs, "Irene Goodnidht," "This Land is Your Land ," along with many other loved favorites, even "Greensleves". A long line of folk music lead to Dylan ,then Dylan took the leed, and showed the way. Old Pete and his mates just couldnt cope with change, but were an important part of where Dylan went.

"Giday folkrockman, a question out of the blue ,I like to think he'd do just fine, how about the words of "Joey" or "Tweeter and the Monkey Man,'' if Dylan went to a gangsta-rap Newport to do a spot, I'd wana be there. The ability of Bob to change, is a part of who he is. I wonder what he'd think of that.? Hay Man , this wiki is just great , thanks from downunder." Good points!

I have just begun looking for a copy of Dylan's 'Renaldo and Clara', without any success. I saw the original four hour film in an obscure cinema in London when I was fifteen years old, in 1976. I loved it, although doubtlessly missed a great deal that perhaps I would now appreciate more. Is anyone able to help me find a copy?

Peter my sweet,
"clung to a ludicrous notion of cultural expression" Maybe there was a bad connection and this was all you were able to hear? Mr. Dylan shares my soul plugged & unplugged. He is certainly one of the 12 apostles.

This song to me is about reaching the absolute rock bottom, the complete and utter end of something, accepting it and making a new beginning. No song has ever expressed this state more profoundly both in the lyrics and in the way that it is sung. This is the genius of Dylan. In one turn of phrase he can say it all. "Forget the dead you've left, they will not follow you".

One of Dylan's all time best. Devastating lyrics and emotion. And the way he turns the phrase in the last line from the personal to the universal. "It's a wonder we can even feed ourselves". Although it is such a personal song, it could be about any one of us. Idiot Wind is also great because of the WAY he sings it. He is just seething with loss and anger and bitterness and sadness. It's All Over Now Baby Blue is very similar in that sense. I love this place by the way. My very first memory is of late afternoon light, a bowl of fruit on a kitchen table, a green armchair and my mother's skirt twirling as she danced me around the kitchen to Just Like a Woman. We played If You See Her Say Hello at her wake. Dylan has been and always will be the soundtrack to my life.

Yeah, my first reaction to "Self Portrait" was a big "Ugh!" It was difficult to listen to him destroying his own songs ("Like a Rolling Stone") or embarassing himself with those of others ("The Boxer").
But now, thanks to the magic of CD players and the skip button, you can skip over the junk, and what's left is a very good album! It's got a nice relaxed feel to it, with plenty of wamth. (Actually, one of these days I'll burn an "alternate" copy so I don't need to worry about finding the skip button ...)
