This song to me is about reaching the absolute rock bottom, the complete and utter end of something, accepting it and making a new beginning. No song has ever expressed this state more profoundly both in the lyrics and in the way that it is sung. This is the genius of Dylan. In one turn of phrase he can say it all. "Forget the dead you've left, they will not follow you".
